Ukraine Legalizes Medical Cannabis
On August 16, 2024, Ukraine officially legalized medical cannabis, marking a significant step forward in healthcare reform. This decision, championed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, allows for the cultivation of hemp for medical, industrial, and scientific purposes.
The law is designed to address conditions such as cancer, epilepsy, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), potentially benefiting around six million Ukrainians. Access to cannabis-based treatments requires a medical prescription, with strict regulations governing distribution. While cancer and epilepsy are already recognized conditions for treatment, PTSD has yet to gain formal approval, sparking ongoing discussions within the Ministry of Health.
To ensure the smooth rollout of this initiative, specialized training for doctors on prescribing medical cannabis will commence in October, with the first prescriptions expected by November. Morocco’s First Legal Cannabis Export to Switzerland
In a groundbreaking move, Morocco completed its first legal export of cannabis to Switzerland in the second quarter of 2024. The shipment, consisting of one quintal of resin with less than 1% THC content, was sold at a price range of €1,400 to €1,800 per kilogram.
This milestone follows Morocco’s 2021 legalization of medical, pharmaceutical, and industrial cannabis use. Approximately 200 operators are now active in this emerging market, signaling its economic potential. The global market for therapeutic cannabis is projected to reach $50 billion by 2028, and Morocco aims to capture 10-15% of the European market, potentially generating €400-600 million annually.
Efforts are underway to develop local cannabis strains, such as the "beldiya," while collaborations with French companies highlight Morocco’s ambition to establish itself as a key player in the European cannabis market. This legal export marks a significant step toward transforming Morocco's traditional cannabis production into a regulated and lucrative industry.
